Dance of Life

Oil on Canvas - 14"x11"

Finished February 8, 2000

Concept:

I did this painting quickly in a few days leading up to my first solo art show. First, I did a quick sketch of a cemetery by the Oxmoor Mall that I would pass daily on my way to work while working for an advertising agency. I didn't want the painting to be all about death, so I chose to add some life to it by having a figure dancing in the sunlight breaking through a very gray day. I kept it ambiguous if the female dancing was a statue or an actual person because I don't think it matters much.

You can't have death without life. For me, the painting is ok – it's not that bad, considering I was in a crazy rush to add more pictures to a show. I consider this to be part of my tree series.
